Apparently the video of an angry man (Jack Rebney) trying to sell a Winnebago has been a piece of visual solace and comfort to many for years. Some claim to have watched it thousands of times, others claim it gave them hope after tough days and it has been quoted in a few unmemorable films, but nobody gave much thought to the man having the meltdown until Austin-based director Ben Steinbauer.

Shit Robot

From the Cradle to the Rave
DFA Records
September 21st, 2010

by Neil Miller, Jr.

DFA Records has gone through an exceptional journey over the past near-decade. They’ve given us The Juan MacLean, The Rapture, Black Dice, Hot Chip, and of course LCD Soundsystem. Sadly, what seems to always fall under the radar are the releases of Shit Robot. Marcus Lambkin, an Ireland native transplanted to NY in the early days of DFA, used to DJ alongside future LCD frontman James Murphy. Even better, he literally helped build DFA studios – so next time you listen to your favorite Hot Chip or LCD record, you have Shit Robot to thank for that. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Shit Robot releases are among the highest caliber on DFA Records.

07.20.10 | HERE WE GO MAGIC || Schubas

Here We Go Magic
Saturday, July 17th, 2010
at Schubas

by Alyssa Meza

After a long day sweating it out in the sun at Pitchfork Music Festival a modest group of hip young things gathered at the intimate Schubas Tavern on Saturday, July 17 for the Here We Go Magic after show, and oh what a magical evening it was. After a lovely small set from the talented singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten, the quintet took to the stage after being up for a full 24 hours, according to the guitarist and lead vocalist Luke Temple.

Thankfully, they showed no signs of fatigue as they played an exuberant and energetic 60 minute set. Pigeons, the sophomore album by Here We Go Magic, is praised for its multi-layered sound and complex arrangements, something that is not easily translatable to a live performance without all the bells-and-whistles of a studio.

Tapes 'n Tapes

Minneapolis' Tapes ‘n Tapes made a sizable splash in the mid-aughts with their release The Loon, a collection of hummable post-punk gems perfect for both the night-of and the morning after. Part of the First Wave of Blog Buzz Bands (F.W.O.B.B. to those in the know), the boys from the North Star State truly appeared to be on the fast track to Killers-town, even placing a tune in one of those Michael Cera by-the-numbers tween flicks. After making the rounds of major music festivals and talk-shows, the band released Walk It Off, which was met with both disappointing sales and reception, and soon fell off of the radar.

The Tapesmen (as this writer is wont to call them) hope to re-capture the hooks that made Insistor and the rest of The Loon's tracks so durned catchy with their new as-yet untitled record, which should be ready for the general public sometime before 2011. If you're hoping to catch a sneak ear-peak of the new tunes, mosey on over to everyone's favorite new venue, Lincoln Hall, on Thursday evening. The show has a 9:00 PM kick off, with Chicago darlings Unicycle Loves You opening the festivities. You've got to be of legal drinking age with $15 frogskins in hand to make it into this show, pals. We recommend that you do... OR ELSE.—Henry Bianco

Email your full name to submit@urchicago.com and you will be entered to win a pair of tickets to see Tapes 'n Tapes on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 at Lincoln Hall (2424 N. Lincoln).
