CoutURe INTERVIEW: International Play Boy

Who is Howard Godfrey? He is a father. He is an artist. He is an entrepreneur. He is my very talented and much appreciated hair stylist. Now, he can add international poster boy to his growing list of royalties. Howard became one of the subjects of world-renowned photographer Victor Skrebneki for Chicago’s International Film Festival. As the grandson of famous artist Annie Lee, Howard grew up in the presence of art. So, he’s no stranger to the art world. I had a sit down with Howard on how it was to be a part of art in the making, his other creative initiatives, and how it was to work with Victor Skrebneki. – Fashion Editor, Terrence Chappell

CoutURe: Black is Back

Living Room by Kip Rodrigue Designs

While working on my article, I was reminded of an unnerving incident. During a presentation with two young and sophisticated clients; she was resplendent in a stunning little, black dress and chic black stilettos; he was equally dapper in a tailored black suit, black-and-white tie, and black shoes, I noticed that an increasingly incredulous snarl was appearing on their faces. “Did I understand you correctly”, the wife sniped. “You want to paint our room in black?” Panic stricken, I quickly countered, “But you are both head-to-toe in black!”

David Hicks Living Room, c.1960's

I often use black for interiors, even my own living room is painted wall-to-wall in Pratt and Lambert's Obsidian,  a rich, subtly nuanced black, which changes immeasurably throughout the day. Dark-colored walls are an exceedingly good solution if you want the facade of hi-rise living. Moreover, black walls help your furnishings and art 'pop’, especially if painted with a reflective, higher-gloss sheen. Black is also an exquisite backdrop when paired with other colors; white, of course, and certain shades of red, yellow, pink, green, brown, and purple. The metals in cocktail tables, lamps, etc. -- from bronze to gunmetal to nickel -- appear sumptuous when paired with black. I’m not reinventing the wheel. Black has been used throughout much of the history of interiors. In fact, it was a black room by turn-of-the-century architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, and another black room by mid-century designer David Hicks, which inspired my room.

Sir Edwin Lutyens Room, c. 1906

I am intrepid with my own rooms‘designs, but if you’re squeamish, then simply accessorize with black. I recently finished a client’s room in an array of shimmering silvery grays, anchoring the space with a mid-century French sofa swathed in black velvet with black faux-horsehair pillows. For another client who didn’t want to replace his newer, albeit uninspired, cabinets, I had them spray-lacquered in black to stunning effect. I often paint hallway doors in a high-gloss black. It’s easy, inexpensive and will transform an otherwise humdrum space into one reminiscent of an old-world hotel. Wallpaper a room, or just accent a wall in a graphic black-and-white patterned wallpaper. Or paint your walls white and hang an assortment of black-and-white images framed in black ,or a single large-scale black-and-white abstract painting. Give a room an air of sophistication with a pair of black lamps flanking your sofa or bed, or even place black lampshades on existing lamps. Wooden floors stained in ebony, or black and white marble tiles are a dramatic backdrop for any style furnishings. As this city is a mecca for Mies-designed buildings, utilize his chrome and black leather chairs as accents. Equally prevalent here are the black-and-white tiled bathrooms in 20’s-era mid-rises, a look easily and inexpensively replicated. If your tastes run more contemporary, utilize a glossy mosaic glass tile in black. Even if your style is more old-world than urban, you can use a black-and-white toile fabric, black-lacquered antiques, or the like, to magnificent effect.

Contemporary Living Area with white walls and black accent pieces and art

As black in fashion crosses all genres of style, whether a black Chanel dress on one of Chicago’s socialites or on a young man in a punk/emo ensemble, just know that whatever your interior style is, black is back! Kip Rodrigue

New CoutURe Contributor: Kip Rodrigue

Kip Rodrigue, founder and owner of Kip Rodrigue Designs, is a relative newcomer to Chicago. A southerner by birth, Kip was raised in New Orleans, LA., where he was deeply inspired by the city’s rich architecture and culture. This environment fueled his passion for design and motivated him to graduate with a bachelor’s in Art & Architectural History. Kip’s education and background led him to a career in interior design consulting. His style is an eclectic juxtaposition of fine antiques and higher-end modern furnishings- particularly mid-century European.

Kip's work has been featured in a variety of luxury lifestyle titles around the nation. An avid collector of antiques, Old-Master works, and mid-century European furniture, all nestled in his Streeterville home. Kip is involved in a number of charity initiatives around the city as well. Kip can often be spotted around the latest hotspots and old-school favorites alike -- always donning a jacket and pocket-square, of course -- in the eternal search for his Holy Grail: The Perfect Martini. CoutURe: Air Repair Kit

Leave the stamps and wrinkles for your passport and other traveling documents, not your face. Denise Spanek, president of Visage Studio, has created the ultimate in air travel beauty.

Denise's Air Repair Kit includes a full line of products encased in a convenient carry-on. For $65, the jet set can bring a traveling spa on the plane, in the limo, or even for a quick refresher between meetings or work and play. Products include the air repair beauty balm, eye cream, soothing facial cleansing milk, complexion quenching facial mist, and the rescue balm (all-purpose skin salve and my personal favorite). Each product is sold separately as well.

“I wanted to develop a carry-on friendly system people could use that would streamline their skincare,” said Denise, president of Visage Studio.

The Air Repair Kit has been featured on the Rachael Ray Show, in Allure magazine, Glamour magazine, and a number of other publications. In developing the kit, Denise aimed for a balance of natural and effective ingredients. Each ingredient combats common skin problems associated with environmental changes and travel. The hyaluronic acid keeps a handle on moisture retention while the cloudberry seed oil is a powerful anti-oxidant. The heat shocking proteins fights off climate change as well. And to top it off, the kit is recyclable. The Air Repair Kit is one of many beauty products offered by Visage Studio.

Visage Studio is a boutique online retailer of exclusive, high-end beauty products and treatments. Brands include Anne Semonin, Earthworks, Wallet Cosmetics, and several other luxury brands. With the addition of Denise’s very own Air Repair Kit line and potential plans to distribute the line in Chicago, perhaps Chicagoans won’t be dipping and dodging lights when exiting the plane.—Terrence

CoutURe: Benjamin Newby on Nicholas Hansen

I have to say that it has been a blessing and a joy to meet Mr. Nicholas Hansen, proprietor of Nicholas Joseph Chicago Custom Tailors, who has not only become a firm friend but also my main supplier of fine suits, shirts and gentlemanly accessories. I was lucky enough to go to Halo for Men’s Elm Street Salon and Spa for The Man and met both Bob Patrazi (owner of Halo) and Nick, who were already friends and turned out to be the perfect pair for my styling needs. With our common interests and hard work ethic, a trifecta flourished, and that trifecta was groomed by Halo, draped in Nicholas Joseph and rocked by The Underground.

CoutURe: UR Chicago Staff Christmas Wish List

Although Christmas is a time of the year when it is better to give than receive, let’s be honest, receiving is so much more fun! So in the holiday spirit, UR Chicago staffers put together a little Christmas wish list to send to Santa this year. A little self-indulgence never hurt anyone! Oh yea, and feel free to mail any of these gifts to us over at the office; it would be much appreciated. - Terrence
